ZAKYNTHOS

Zakynthos, or the more well known name of Zante is the third largest island of the Ionian Islands, off the west coast of mainland Greece.  The islands are made up of seven large islands plus some smaller ones and were traditionally known as The Seven Islands.  The seven from North to South are Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Kythira, it should be noted that this last island is not part of the periphery of the  Ionian Islands but is now in the periphery of Attiki.

Zakynthos covers an area of 410 square kilometres and has a coastline of roughly 123 kilometres.

The island has a mild Mediterranean climate with plentiful rain in winter which makes it very green.  The principal products are olive oil, it is still very much a farming community.  It has a thriving tourist industry and is one of the top destination in Greece, and is also home to the endangered loggerhead turtles (carreta carreta).
